well you know that my life is complicated when what is really distracting me is the weather. But hey after all, we are one with nature...
They say it will be summer again by next week...
As of Thursday of last week (up until I guess this weekend) is the annual film festival here in Athens. I saw two films this weekend. One called 'Choke' directed by Clark Gregg (that guy from 'The New Adventures of Old Christine') starring Angelica Houston and a documentary about some miserable misfortunate people of Istanbul. The documentary was a bit upsetting. The film was about the way the gay, transgender, transsexual community is treated in Turkey, and it showed such a melancholy image of Istanbul and focussed so much on the negative sides of these people (who were quite pathetic as characters) it began to confuse me as to what I am suppose to be feeling about neighbor to the east who we share so much history with. The growing typical social standard these days in Greece is to turn a blind eye to what happens in Turkey so that we can just surpass all of the bad relations we had past and just try and move forward on more friendlier terms. Well at least that is how it seems...
On another note I read this article last night that talks of the actions of the government of Greece almost a hundred years ago, during a time of insecure boarders, of forced Hellenization of the minority populations and says that only a miniscule fraction of Greeks today have lineage to ancient Greece. Though their is truth in what he is discussing, it is almost irrelevant at this time to discuss today the actions of a government from a hundred years ago for something that happened within its borders, especially when the Macedonian naming dispute is in effect.
Its your basic Slavo-Macedonian anti-Greek sentiment coming from a nationalist living abroad trying to show a low point in Greece's history, all just to use it as a way to win points in its struggle to steal a part of Greek history, the name Macedonia.
